Mega police operation in Rio's favelas causes the closure of 70 schools and affects more than 23 thousand students

The mega police operation carried out by the Civil and Military police of RJ this Monday (9), in Complexo da Maré, Vila Cruzeiro and Cidade de Deus, caused the closure of 70 municipal and state education units, affecting 23,360 students.
Most of the units whose operations were affected are from the Municipal Department of Education. The ministry announced that 66 schools were closed. Among these, only 9 provided remote assistance.
The State Department of Education reported that it had to stop activities in 4 units.

In Vila Cruzeiro, also in the North Zone, 18 units did not open their doors, impacting 4,757 students from the municipal network and 1000 students from the state network.
In Cidade de Deus, in the West Zone, the SME reported that 9 units were closed, but that 2,954 students were served remotely. The department did not detail, however, whether the number represents the total number of students enrolled in units in the region. According to Seeduc, the units in Cidade de Deus are nocturnal, and, until the end of this Monday afternoon, they were expected to operate normally.
According to the secretariats, teaching units were also affected in Morro da Serrinha, in the Madureira region. According to PMERJ, there was an exchange of gunfire this morning between rival factions disputing territory.
There were 3 municipal schools impacted, affecting 638 students, and 3 state schools, impacting 1,500 students. If data from units affected by the mega-operation and the dispute between factions are added together, there are 76 schools impacted and almost 25,500 students affected.
The joint operation mobilized a thousand police officers. Residents of different locations reported shootings late in the morning. At the beginning of the action, two police helicopters were hit by gunfire.
